A leather backing and titanium frame equal big bucks in the smartphone world
Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer is well known for its high-quality timepieces, but rarely do they venture into the world of electronics. So when the company unveiled its new Link smartphone, we knew it wouldn't be the kind of device you'd find at your local Verizon store. The company didn't disappoint, and the $6,700 luxury handset sports a number of features that put it firmly in the realm of "just because."
Despite its astronomical price tag, the Link's tech specs aren't all that groundbreaking. It runs Android 2.2 Froyo, instead of the latest 2.3 Gingerbread release, and comes equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, 3.5" display, and 8GB memory card. Comparatively, the latest HTC and Samsung handsets are an order of magnitude more capable, not to mention just a fraction of the cost.
Of course, for shoppers looking more for glitz than guts, the Link comes through. It is offered in a variety of coverings, including alligator and calfskin, and is protected by a frame composed of either gold or titanium, complete with diamond accents. The screen is encased in high-strength Gorilla Glass, which should help keep it from any catastrophic disintegration if you happen to drop it from your private jet. Still, if you're going to be spending thousands of dollars on a brand new phone, you might expect it to outperform a 2-year-old Motorola Droid.
